Introduction
What is a screenplay? Is it a million dollars spread out over 110 pages? A first–class ticket to Hollywood? The easiest way to write that story that has nagged at you since Junior High school?
Simply put: A screenplay is a story. A story you want to tell in a medium that you hope will not only move and challenge people from all over the world but could, possibly, make you a few bucks (and an award). Meeting a celebrity, or two, in the process might be cool, too.
But how do you get from that story you’ve been kicking around for a few months (years?) in your head to something you can be proud to hand to an agent, a manager, or a Hollywood executive?
Here’s all you need:
1. A pitchable idea. 2. Screenwriting software or WORD template. 3. Maybe a book, or two, on screenwriting to guide you. 4. The ability to write coherently. 5. Time to write the screenplay.
Once you have the finished screenplay, there are steps that you need to take before it can be presentable to someone in Hollywood. Your screenplay needs to look, feel and act like a screenplay.
Where do I come in?
I can help you with getting your script ready for the marketplace. Looking for formatting issues that scream “FIRST TIME WRITER!!” Making suggestions on how to boost characters or, at least, make them consistent. Throw ideas your way that may help take your script from the mediocre to the magnificent. Clean up issues, ask questions that readers will ask, and over-all assist in creating a script that looks, feels and acts like a screenplay.
How do I do this?
After teaching hundreds of students over many years, plus writing and re-writing screenplays of every type and stripe – I bring vast amounts of knowledge to the process.
Using a way of criticism that is positive instead of negative, thorough and complete, and always ALWAYS understanding that it is ultimately you and your screenplay I’m trying to help get made – your experience will make your script better and you a better writer.
What experience do you have?
I have taught beginning screenwriting for many years to hundreds of students at Seattle Central Community College.
I have written over 15 screenplays of different genres.
I have read and written critiques for many books on screenwriting, most of them months before release so I have a clue as to how Hollywood is thinking and what is being talked about in the industry.
Besides the above, I have had a couple screenplays optioned and worked with a number of Producers in and out of Hollywood.
